Commodore’s Comments

As submitted by Eileen King

Hello everyone and welcome to spring.  In less than three months summer will be here and we will be renewing our friendships at the club.  How time flies.

The executive committee continues to work on winter and summer projects.  The cold temperatures of the winter did cause a few problems at the club.  We had two pipes freeze and the low temperature alarm was sounded.  Space heaters were installed to warm up the pipes and keep Vic’s office warm enough that the low temperature alarm did not beep.  Six smoke alarms were installed that are connected to the fire monitoring system.  For the summer the social committee is considering having four events that are catered.

It is also time to renew our dredging permits.  We have contracted with an engineering firm that will complete the paperwork for the permits and a firm was been hired to do soil sampling.  Now we just need to wait for the DEP to approve our permit.

By now you should have received your membership renewal forms.  If you can renew your membership before May 1st it would be a great help to the club.  We do not have a large income at this time of the year so our monthly expenses frequently exceed our monthly income.  While we do have a rainy day fund, the executive committee would prefer not to use that for the normal operating expenses of the club if we can avoid it.

Please remember that most of the effort involved in running this club is done by volunteers.  The more people that volunteer, the smaller the workload on each member.   We cannot have an active social calendar without you, our members.  We need you to do something, anything, whatever you feel you can contribute.  We need people to organize events, people to setup for events, people to clean up after an event, people to cook for an event, people to serve food at an event, people to wash and iron table cloths, people to come to the event, and the list goes on for pages.  Whether you believe it or not, I know that you have the ability to make a difference at the Ocean Gate Yacht Club.  It doesn’t matter how old or young you are.  There is a job for everyone.  So please make this year the year that you make a difference.  And please say thank you when you are at the club to the people that volunteer to make the Ocean Gate Yacht Club the best club on the bay.  Our volunteers deserve to be recognized for the work that they do for the club and a thank you from you will go a long way to making them feel appreciated.

2015 Junior Sailing Program

Sail Away With OGYC

The philosophy of OGYC Junior Sailing Program is to cultivate a love of the sport of sailing, whether you are a recreational sailor or enjoy competitive racing. It’s about having fun while learning all aspects of the sport. Our Junior Sailors learn the basics needed to succeed at sailing at any level. OGYC participates in Regattas and Interclub events that provide Junior Sailors the opportunities to race and meet other Junior Sailors on the bay and establish friendships that last throughout their lives. All of our instructors are certified by US Sailing. All lunches are supervised by adult volunteers.

The 2015 OGYC Junior Sailing Program will consist of the following programs and options:

  • Puddle Ducks – An introduction to sailing both a land based and on water program. It teaches water safety, parts of the boat and basic sailing concepts. This program is open to the inexperienced sailor for the ages 6-7 years old. This program is offered from 9:00am-12:00 noon, Monday through Thursday starting July 6th to July 16th.
  • 2-Week Summer Camp – This 2-Week learn to sail program does not require boat ownership. The program is intended for ages 7-13 years old, Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 3:00pm with an hour for lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm. There will be four sessions:
  • Session 1: June 22nd – July 2nd
  • Session 2: July 6th – July 16th
  • Session 3: July 20th – July 30th
  • Session 4: August 4th –August 14th
  • 4 Week Advanced Camp (this is new for 2015) – This 4-Week program is to take novices who have some experience and present advanced instruction and racing techniques. The program does not require boat ownership but it is highly recommended. The program is intended for ages 8-13 years old, Monday through Thursday 9:00am to 3:00pm with an hour for lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm. There will be two sessions:
  • Session 1: June 22nd – July 16th
  • Session 2: July 20th – August 14th
  • Junior Sailing 8 Week Session – This Junior Sailing Program provides a full summer of fun and learning experiences for eight weeks, Monday through Thursday, 8:00am to 3:30pm with an hour for lunch 11:30am to 12:30pm, starting June 22nd through August 14th The program does require boat ownership. Junior Sailing membership includes OGYC Sailing Team Shirt, US Sailing Anchor membership and no charge for boat ground space.
  • The following fleets are instructed full-day: Optimist A, Optimist B, Optimist C, Sunfish, and Laser.
  • A ½ Day Opti C (beginner) 8 week program is also offered (8:30 am-11:30 am)
  • All OGYC sailors are encouraged to participate in all Regattas and Interclub events especially the OGYC Classic. OGYC also offers Sunday series every Sunday at the club. This is a great event for our novice sailors to improve their racing skills in the comfort of our own sailing area.
  • Adult Sailing – For parents and adults that would like to learn the basics of sailing. The program is on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, starting on June 24th. Last year it was a rocky start for the adult program but it should be more structured this year. Its success will be determined by the extent of participation. This is a great opportunity for daily sailing parents and any other club members to gain some meaningful “time in a boat” experience at no cost.

The 2015 Junior Program fees will remain the same as last year. All interested sailors and adults should reply to this inquiry as to their preference of program and the type of boat they plan on sailing this year. This information is necessary to determine the number of certified instructors needed for the summer programs. All Junior Sailing 2015 registration forms will be posted on the OGYC.net web site shortly. For any questions, do not hesitate to contact me at jfryog@aol.com . Please include “Sailing” in the subject line of the email.

OGYC members, Happy Spring!  We are all gearing up for the exciting upcoming activities at the club.  Our social committee has decided to offer you several catered events during our summer season.  This will help to minimize the amount of work required by volunteer club members.  We will keep you informed of these dates as they are scheduled.  Please take the time to fill out your membership renewal and seriously consider when and how you can volunteer to help.  Looking forward to seeing everyone very soon.

BBYRA News

The BBYRA has made several changes for the upcoming Championship Season.  A big change is online registration for the season.  When this option is ready there will be an obvious link to the registration form from the BBYRA home page.  There will not be a late fee for skippers that register online.  Paper registration by snail mail or on site will still be available but a late fee will be assessed after a certain date.  The other big news is changes to the barrel courses and the Down Bay course sheet.  In order to provide the race committee better options for using barrel courses and inflatable course on the same day and getting courses that are square to the wind, there will now be multiple options for a starting area based on the wind direction.  For instance, if the wind is from the Southeast for a down bay day the starting area may be near W, H or E.  As a result, there will no longer be a course sheet just for Seaside Park.  On the water registration for daily registrations and skipper or sail number changes will still be accepted.  Other changes include using the same upwind finish boat for the inflatable course and the barrel course, changing the Two-Turn Penalty to a One-Turn Penalty in RRS 44.1 and eliminating the inflatable mark AA.  The season will start on Saturday, June 27th and end on Saturday, September 5th with the open week on Saturday, August 1st.

In other news, the BBYRA Commodore’s Ball will be held at Toms River Yacht Club on Saturday, June 13th at 6:30PM.  If you are interested in learning how to be a Judge for a sailing regatta there will be a judge course on Saturday, May 9th at the Raritan Yacht Club.  The fee to attend is $50.  Registrations should be done online at ussailing.org.  Just click on the Race Officials button.

General Announcements:

The club now offers credit card payments.  Membership, events, and apparel may be paid for with a credit card.  To use a credit card call Kathy Cronheim (Treasurer) at 732-269-3472

They will be here June 13th, 14th and 15th for a Regional Regatta.  There will be approximately 15 boats and around 60 sailors participating in the regatta.  Breakfast will be served to the sailors Saturday and Sunday morning and a dinner will be served Saturday evening.  We need your help prepping the food and serving the food.  Breakfast helpers will need to be at the club at 7AM.  Prepping for dinner will take place on Saturday afternoon.  Lunches will be made by the sailors.  We would like to have the bar open Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon for the enjoyment of the sailors and our members.  That requires bar tenders.  Some of the participants may need housing so if you have a room available let Nancy know.  If you lease a slip and do not plan to have your boat in the water in June we would like to offer the ensigns the opportunity to put their boat in your slip.  These boats are kept in the water so we need a place to moor the boats Friday and Saturday evening.  If you will have your boat in the water we need patrol boats and a committee boat.  If you don’t have a boat but would like to help on the water we can use your help also.  Contact Nancy Foote at nfoote@sleepmed.md or at 856-266-3115 to volunteer to help with this regatta.

Slips

The final boat slip payment was due March 31, 2015.  If you have not made your final payment, please contact Treasurer Kathleen Cronheim to make arrangements for your slip lease payment.  We have three slips available for lease.  Slips 18 & 15 are on the water side of the club, while slip 4 is on the river side.  If you are interested in leasing one of these slips please contact Riley Applegate.

Volunteer Needed

The executive committee is looking for someone(s) to volunteer to run an evening program for the children in the club.  In the past there was a program for the children 13 and older and a program for the children 12 and under.  We can combine the two programs or run two separate programs depending on the interest of the children and their parents.  If you would be willing to organize activities for one or both of these groups please contact me at 856-234-3062 or at kingsofnj@comcast.net

Bar/Social Committee:

Meetings = May 3 (Sunday) at 10 am & June 4 (Thursday) at 7 pm

Joella says, we are still looking for volunteers to host/co-host the Summer Solstice 06/20/15 and Red/White/Blue 06/27/15 parties.
