OGYC Ship’s store –            Need Volunteers

As everyone knows we are a volunteer organization and it takes all members to participate to ensure the success of the club and to maintain the proud heritage of the club. If any member is interested in supporting any of the committees please feel free to contact me or the committee chairperson listed above. Many of the present volunteers are not getting any younger and more help from the younger members would be greatly appreciated. As of this newsletter we do need someone to handle the OGYC Ship’s Store. Future newsletters and emails will be requesting volunteers to get the club ready for the summer season and we hope many of our members will step up.

Another topic that was discussed in the last newsletter was the updating of the website to make it more user friendly. The new website (OceangateYC.com) has been up and running for the convenience of the membership. The old web site OGYC.net has been deactivated and the old address will automatically give you the new site.  All of the 2017 registration forms are up on the website. An email will be going out shortly for membership renewals. Hopefully many of the renewals will be accomplished on-line. We are considering changing our email account with Yahoo to an account with Google. More information will be forthcoming.

Since the last newsletter the club has been winterized, the ice-eaters are installed to prevent any damage to the marina pilings due to ice. Thanks again this year to Tim McNeilly and Lee Gashlin we were able to do the necessary dredging around the marina at a significant cost savings. Thanks Tim and Lee.

Following up on questions from various members, the executive board is reviewing the club’s visitor/guest policy. Several issues have been identified and must be corrected. The guest sign-in to the club is the responsibility of the member whose guest is attending an event. The present policy stipulates that a guest may attend 4 events in a given year. After the second/third visit the executive board and the sponsoring member would like to discuss with the guest the possibility of joining the club. We plan on monitoring the guest sign-ins closer than we have in the past to ensure compliance with the policy. There is a sign-in book either at the door or in the bar for the members and their guests. A member’s name must be next to the guest’s name.

If any member or groups of members have any other suggestions, please feel free to let me know.

The executive board is continuing to work at  maintaining the appearance and overall goings on of the club.

In order to help with this a “House Committee” is being formed.

If you are interested in being a part of this committee please send an email to sailing@oceangateyc.com or additional information.

At this time, I am currently working with our Head Sailing Instructor to finalize the logistics of the junior sailing program for the upcoming 2017 season. We will be maintaining the eight week sailing lessons with the following fleets:  Opti C, B and A, Sunfish, Lasers, 4.7, 420 and Feva.  The two weeks, four week, half day and Puddle Duck programs will once again be available. The focus is always on the basics of sailing which include how to rig and derig, water safety, general seamanship and basic racing information.

Please take a few minutes now to go to the oceangateyc.com web site to review the new 2017 sailing registration form.  You will find the beginning and ending dates of the 8 week and 2 week lessons on this form. This should help you to quickly and efficiently plan ahead. Registrations are currently being accepted. It is highly recommended that all forms be completed on line.

NOTE:  This year we will offer an early registration discount if you sign up prior to May 1, 2017.  Please see the registration form for all the details.

Our Sunday series is an 8 week series of races that takes place at the OGYC starting at 10 AM on Sundays during the months of July and August. With a little hard work and some serious volunteerism we can offer our Junior sailors and anyone else interested in participating, additional time to practice sailing around a race course in a very friendly, intimate atmosphere.  This has proven to be a thrill for the kids and their families and enjoyment to many of our club members. For anyone who is unfamiliar, there is a $5 entry fee which includes a hot lunch, a race committee, patrol boats, coaching and prize pendants for the first, second and third place in each fleet (given out during an informal awards presentation after the races).

Please plan to come and watch and cheer on our sailors. If you are available to help with any of the tasks that go into putting this event together please contact me asap @ sailing@oceangateyc.com. We are always looking for volunteers. Remember that you don’t have to have a child in the program in order to join in the fun.

Adult lessons will take place one day/ night a week. Keep in mind that  No experience is necessary!  The intent is to increase sailing interest and help our parents to understand the sport of sailing for their own personal enjoyment and to educate parents about how to sail so they can use this knowledge as a tool when assisting the children with their sailing.

Additional information will be sent out to all members in future emails providing more details. Any members interested in these programs, please contact me by email at sailing@oceangateyc.com (please indicate “sailing” in the subject line). For many of our senior memberships you might want to consider a two week program for your grandchildren.

Keep warm and enjoy the rest of this winter season

Lynda
