Commodore’s Comments

As submitted by Eileen King

I hope that everyone has found time to come to the club at least once, this summer to enjoy the comradery and view that the club offers to its members.  If you haven’t, there is plenty of time left to the summer to come on down.  The building is open daily from 8 AM until 5 PM.  On Friday the club bar is open from 7 PM until 10 PM when we have a bartender.  The hours on Saturday evenings vary depending on the events that are scheduled.  Please check the club website for the schedule of events.  Enjoy the rest of the summer and see you all at the opening meeting and election of Officers, Executive Committee and Trustees on Saturday, August 15th at 7:30 PM at the club.

OGYC sailing program has completed its first three weeks of instruction for 2015. This year we have (34) 8 week sailors, (15) 4 week sailors, (27) 2 week sailors and (6) puddleducks.

We are instructing in Lasers, Sunfish, Opti “A”, Opti “B” and Opti “C”. The 2 and 4 week sailors are using club Optis and Sunfish.

OGYC now owns 8 Optis and 5 Sunfish as part of the sailing program. A special thanks to Tom Fitzgerald for keeping our club boats up and operational for our sailors.

We have hired an additional 2 instructors this year to support the sailing programs. We now have 8 instructors. A special thanks to the instructors for their dedication to their students and especially for making my job easier.

Our sailors are participating in the down bay interclub races and various regattas.

Overall the OGYC sailing program is in an up-swing in sailors. We have gone from an average of 30 sailors a day in 2014 to 50 sailors a day in 2015. We have been fortunate that the 2 week and 4 week programs have contributed to this increase not only in the daily numbers but in the increased number of 8 week sailors.

As many of you know, our fleet of Boston Whalers is getting old along with their engines. Over the last two years we have purchased one newer used engine and one brand new engine at a cost of $11,500. We were able to secure a $5000 grant from the Sailing Foundation of Barnegat Bay to help defray this added cost. The two remaining Boston Whaler engines are at least 10/12 years old and are in need of repair. One of these engines can barely make 3-5 MPH. Our instructors are making due. In order to ensure the safety of our sailors we have been lucky to borrow an additional boat from the Voss family. Thank You. We have applied for an additional grant this year to the foundation again. We are hoping for the best. A new engine will cost about $7500.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Eileen, our Commodore and the entire Executive Committee for their unending support of the sailing program. A special thanks to all the OGYC members who support the club in various ways to ensure that OGYC sailing program continues in its proud heritage.

The summer is in full swing with many exciting events that have taken place over the last month.
Thanks to all of our volunteers there has been something happening at the club every weekend.

We opened the bar almost every Friday and Saturday and would like to continue to do that until the end of September. If you are interested in volunteering please contact my phone @ 732-269-9361 or email decorlynn@comcast.net.

Our next event is the Annual Junior Sailing Auction , this Saturday Aug.1st at 6PM.

We ask each family to make a small donation to this event and bring it up to the club with your name attached to it and leave it in the junior’s room. Please try to get these items up to the club this week ASAP.

BBYRA

The BBYRA Championship Series has completed the first half of the season.  We have numerous members competing in the series.  Flags are awarded to the top three finishers in each fleet.  In the Sneakbox fleet we have Russ Lines and Ericka Amon competing.  Right now Ericka is in first place and Russ is in second place.  The Sneakboxes have had 6 races.  Ericka has finished in first place 2 times and in second place 4 times.  Russ has finished in first place 2 times and in second place once.  Tim McNeilly is competing in the Sandpiper fleet.  Tim has not placed in the top three yet but he is getting closer to the front of the fleet each week.  Go Tim.  The sunfish fleet is our most popular fleet, with three competitors.  That fleet has completed 7 races.  Alan Dittenhofer is in third place with 2 second places finishes and 3 third place finishes.  John king has had 1 first and 1 third place finish and Dave Sikora has 1 third place finish.  In the afternoon we have Nelson Hartranft in the A-Cat fleet with 1 first place finish and 1 third place finish.  Trace Dittenhofer is our final competitor on the water in the Ensign fleet.  Trace is the youngest skipper in the fleet and is competing against people that have raced longer than Trace has been alive.  Yeah Trace.  In addition to these skippers we have numerous members out every Saturday as crew members.  Crew members are not registered so I can’t identify all of them by name.

I want to thank Harry Foote, Rich Proko, and Roland Santomenna for their commitment to the club and the BBYRA.  They are out there every Saturday helping the BBYRA to run the races for all of the racers.

Remember that Saturday, August 8th it is our turn, along with Pine Beach Yacht Club, to host the BBYRA Championship Series.  Lunch will be available that day.  The menu includes hamburgers and hot dogs.  After lunch the A-Cats will do an anchor start and will finish off the club dock.  We will also be finishing the Flying Scot fleet off the dock.  After the races there will be a Cocktail Party at the club.  Please bring an hors d’oeuvres to share.

Articles/Information:

It is with sadness to inform the membership that long term club steward Bill Adams passed away 07/15/2015.

Welcome Aboard Party:

Volunteerism is alive and well based on the group of club members that agreed to be part of the committee that put together and ran this seasons Welcome Aboard Party.  The cocktail party to welcome our 9 new families to our club was received very well.  Commodore Eileen King introduced the new members and their family.  Please make every effort to introduce yourself to each of them and remember they are new to our club and should be made to feel welcome at future events.  Their pictures will be on display all season in the entrance of the club to help everyone familiarize themselves with each of them. Terry and Al Dameika have graciously agreed to take on the responsibility of rejuvenating and maintaining the publicity boards in the entrance of our club.  The evening started at 6:00pm with heavy hors d’oeuvres and live musical entertainment by Bill Fredricks.  The club was arranged with high top tables and decorated to a cabaret feel with lots of room to mingle and pick on the very tasty hors d’ oeuvres.  The committee of club members who made this event possible were Kathleen& Craig Cronheim, Joella  Nicastro, Dick & Marylou Andrews, Jean & Rich Pachucki, Terry and Al  Dameika, Jean & Larry McDowell and a special thanks to Mike DiNigris  who jumped in at the last minute as a volunteer bartender.

Doo Wop Dance Party:

The committee of Larry & Jean McDowell, Craig and Kathleen Cronheim, Jean Pachucki, Al & Terry Dameika and Rosemary Butow put together and ran a Doo Wop dance party on July 18 the same day as The Ocean Gate Fireman’s roast beef dinner fund raiser.  Many folks went to the fund raiser dinner then came to The Club to enjoy an evening of dancing and live entertainment.  Special thanks to Rosemary Butow for joining in and sharing her decorating skills.  Her suggestion to include an ice cream bar was a huge success. Ticket sales were limited to 80 to make room for a dance floor, the event sold out days in advance.  Hopefully other members will step up with ideas and be willing to run an activity we can all enjoy.
