Hold onto your hats because a whirlwind of activities will be occurring at the club from now until Labor Day Weekend.  Starting Monday, June 22nd the Junior Sailing Program will have the club crawling with children learning about boat care, how to sail those boats and for the advanced students how to race their boats.  For everyone there is Sunday morning coffee and donuts, Taco Tuesdays, Wednesday adult sailing, and the numerous events planned for Friday and Saturday evenings.  Be sure to check out the calendar included in this newsletter along with the club website at ogyc.net to know what is happening and when it is happening at the club.  This is your club so come on down and enjoy the fun.

Our first open Executive Committee meeting will be held at the club on Friday, July 10th at 7:30pm.  I hope to see all of you there.

OGYC junior sailing program starts June 22nd. Because of the higher registration this year, two additional instructors were hired along with all the instructors from last year. We have between 35 to 37 8 week sailors, ten of them coming back after their 2 week experience in 2014. Of the 35 to 37 sailors, 2 will be 1/2 day. We will have fleets in Laser, Sunfish, Opti A, Opti B, and Opti C. Puddleducks also has a strong turnout. The 2 and 4 week programs are over 60% filled with additions being added daily. I am limiting the 2 and 4 week programs to 8 or 9 sailors per session. Last year we had many of our members grandchildren participate in the 2 week program. There are still openings in some of the sessions. Remember that the two week program does not require you to own a boat. OGYC will provide a boat at no cost for our 2 week sailors.

On any given day we will have on average 50 sailors at the club. This is up from 30 sailors last year. We could use some additional help during the lunch break, in addition to the sailor’s parents volunteering, that monitor the sailors that are remaining at the club for lunch. Believe me the instructors really need that lunch break. Please contact me or stop by the club and sign up on the calendar posted.

As always, members are welcomed to view the sailors from the deck at any time. We do ask visitors, members and parents to remain up on the deck to allow the instructors to conduct their classes. If you have any questions please feel free to talk with me at any time or with the head instructor at lunch or after program at the end of the day.

Hi Everyone,

Our Spring season proved to be busy and profitable for the club. The Lounge was opened several weekends thanks to many volunteer bartenders. Numerous social events brought old friends together and welcomed aboard our new members.  Although we all had a great time it was a little bitter sweet due to fond farewells to our good friends Roger and Michelle Love.  We wish them good luck in their new adventure and look forward to them visiting us soon!

Welcome Summer!

The club is buzzing with excitement! Activities are everywhere ! The bar and social committees have been meeting monthly and we now have a jam packed calendar for the summer of 2015. You can find an updated version in the body of this newsletter.

It is very important that you contact me ASAP if you are available to open the lounge on the dates listed below. There is no experience necessary and I am happy to meet with you to review everything that is involved.

June 26, 27

August 21, 22, 28

The hours for all these dates is 7-10 PM

Please note that our sailing program is now in full swing (which includes Sunday Series)

General Announcements:

– The club now offers credit card payments.  Membership, events, and apparel may be paid for with a credit card.  To use a credit card call Kathy Cronheim (Treasurer) at 732-269-3472

-Anyone who requested paper pages to update their member yearbook for 2015 can pick them up at the club.  All new members can pick up their yearbooks there also.  If there are any new members who have not gotten books please contact Jay Snyder at donnaleejay@aol.com or call 908-477-9201.

Just a reminder that all of the information that is included in the yearbook can also be found on the club’s website = ogyc.net. Use the password that is on your 2015 membership card to access the member’s only portion of the site.

  • BBYRA stickers are in a basket at the club for members
  • We still have 3 open boat slips for anyone interested.

Reminders:

Please pay your dues/boat slip fees.

Membership dues were required by May 1st.   Contact Steve Stone with any questions re: membership.

When you bring a guest to the club it is your responsibility to sign them in as a guest.  This includes your children that are over the age of 19, unless they are in college, then you have until they graduate or reach the age of 22 before they are no longer included in your family or life membership.

For safety reasons glass from the bar is not allowed on the deck.  If you want to take your drink outside please get a to-go cup from the bar.

The only paid employees of the OGYC are the Stewards and the Sailing Instructors.  The remainder of the work is being done by club members that volunteer their time and talents to the club.  Please remember this when you are attending functions at the club.  You can help your fellow club members with their functions by placing all trash from you table in the trash cans and returning all glasses and empty beer bottles to the bar.  You can also ask them if there is anything that you can do to help them with their event once you arrived at the club.

Volunteer(s) Still Needed:

Our Junior Program is in need of an advisor(S).  This group is for children of our members 13 – 19 years old.  In the 1970’s there was also a group for the children of members ages 7 – 12.  These groups are mainly social with an opportunity to do some volunteer work at the yacht club.  Meetings are held one night a week or every other week for an hour or two.  Activities can include volley ball games, an evening sail on the river, going to the movies, watching a movie at the club with popcorn, tie dyeing t-shirts or whatever activities you

can imagine.  Please contact me if you are interested in helping with either of these groups at kingsofnj@comcast.net or 856-234-3062.

Summer Boat Storage:

Please contact Riley Applegate to make arrangements to bring your boat onto the club property.  Each boat stored on the property gets an OGYC sticker so that we can match the boat to the owner.  This summer we have a large number of children in the program plus we have the kayaks and boats that members use that aren’t in the sailing program.  The only way to keep track of all the boats is to match the OGYC sticker to the owner. Every boat on the property needs to have a form filled in and returned to Riley.  This includes the boats being used in the sailing program.  Please help us to help you to know where your boat is on the beach.  Emergencies do happen and when they do we want to make you aware of any situation that affects your boat.

Ocean Gate Junior Regatta

Many years ago the Ocean Gate Yacht club started a regatta for the junior sailors on the bay.  For many years Nancy Foote and I have run this regatta.  We are ready to retire, so this is the last year that we will chair the regatta.  We are looking for people that would like to be on the regatta committee this year to learn the ropes of running a regatta so that they can continue the tradition of a junior regatta next year.  This has proven to be a great fund raiser for the club, making a profit of approximately $7000 for the club.  There will be an organizational meeting of the committee on Sunday, June 28th at 1PM at the club.  If you are interested in being on the committee but can’t attend the meeting please contact Eileen King at 6029-332-2408 or at kingsofnj@comcast.net.

Ensign Regatta

Once again Nancy Foote wowed the sailors that attended the regatta with her food.  The competitors also appreciated the quality of the races that were run by Rich Proko.  Nancy and Rich could not have been successful without the support of club members that helped in the kitchen and on the water.  I also want to thank Alan Dittenhofer who lent us his boat for the start boat and to Ruth and John Lynch for the use of their boat as a finish boat.  Another major component are the judges that deal with any protests that are filed.  Our Chief Judge Harry Foote and his committee did a great job dealing with the two protests that were filed on Saturday.  Thank you to everyone that helped with this regatta and kudos on a job well done.

How do I get e-mails from the club?

When you become a member of the club and give us your e-mail address you will receive an invitation to join OGYCMembers@yahoogroups.com.  Just click on the button that says “Join this Group”.  Unfortunately, yahoo has changed their policy since the group was created and new members now need to create a yahoo account to become a member of the group.  There is no charge for the account and you don’t have to use it, you just need to create it.  Once you complete the joining process you will begin to receive e-mails from the group.  If you change your e-mail address you will need to be added to the group.  We can’t change an e-mail address.  So when you change your e-mail address we need to delete the old address and invite you to join the group with your new e-mail address.  Please notify Steve Stone, our membership chairman, to have your e-mail address changed.  We do have several e-mail addresses that are being returned to us as invalid addresses.  If you think that you gave us an e- mail address and aren’t receiving e-mails please contact Steve Stone at membership@ogyc.net or Eileen King at kingsofnj@comcast.net .

Responding to an e-mail from the group.

If you use the reply button to respond to an e-mail you receive from the group you will send your reply to the entire group.  Before you use the reply button ask yourself if everyone in the yacht club needs to see my response or is it more appropriate to just send it to the person that sent the e-mail.  To send a reply just to the person that sent the e-mail use the “reply to sender” option near the bottom of the e-mail.

Sending an e-mail to the group.

Everyone that is a member of the group can send messages to the group by sending an e-mail to ogycmembers@yahoogroups.com.  Just write an e-mail like you would a personal e-mail to a friend.  In the address line use ogycmembers@yahoogroups.com .  If you have a flyer about your event attach it to the e-mail.  An e-mail sent to the group can only be released one time.  If you would like your e-mail sent on several different dates, you must send an e-mail to the group for each date you would like the flyer released to the group.  E-mails sent to the group should be about yacht club events, sailing opportunities, local events, or yacht club issues.   Please do not use the group for political e-mails, religious e-mails, jokes or chain letters.

If you would like to see previous e-mails that have been sent to the group you can view them by logging into your yahoo account at the yahoo group page.  A list of the groups you belong to will be down the left hand side of the page.  Just click on OGYCMembers and you will have access to all the conversations that have been sent to the group since it was started.

Food Survey

I sent out 162 electronic invitations to the membership asking for input on what type of food service they would like to see at the club.  Of the 162 invitations, 57 responded.  If you have not responded please do it before July 1st.  This is your club and we want to try to provide the membership with the services that you will use.  We can’t do this without you input.  I will announce the survey results at the open meeting on Friday, July 10th.  If you did not receive an invitation to take the survey please contact me at kingsofnj@comcast.net.

U S Sailing Membership

The Ocean Gate Yacht Club participates in the MVP Program with US Sailing.  When you renew your membership and do it through the MVP Program at Ocean Gate Yacht Club you save money and the club earns points that we can use to purchase items from the US Sailing store.  To do this just click on the words “Join or renew through your sailing club’s MVP Program” which can be found on the join or renew page at ussailing.org.  If you have questions or need help getting to the correct page please contact me at kingsofnj@comcast.net.
