Commodore’s Corner
As submitted by Jim Fry

I would like to thank all the members, especially those who participated in the general election meeting in August, and express my appreciation for re-electing me your Commodore. I consider this to be a great honor and I promise you I will continue to give it 110% effort during my term. I know most of the members, and will continue to strive to know every member as soon as possible. During any club event feel free to introduce yourself to me and ask me any questions that you may have about the club activities.

As everyone knows we are a volunteer organization and it takes all members to participate to insure the success of the club and to maintain the proud heritage of the club. If you haven’t volunteered during the past year, please consider doing so during this upcoming year.

As I stated last year, one issue involves the updating of the website. The new website has been in operation since January 2016. We have had some minor difficulties during the year but we believe that things will be significantly better in 2017. Online registration for all aspects of the club’s events will be emphasized even more in 2017. This would include membership registration, sailing program registration, social event reservations, slip and ground space.

Hopefully this will enhance and improve a user friendly website. Some members are having problems with the Yahoo group e-mail distribution and we are looking into another e-mail distribution package to correct this problem.
The executive committee will continue to develop and use operational procedures for all aspects of the club.

This year I would like to focus on updating the Ocean Gate Yacht Club Heritage and adding a historical section to the new website. During the August meeting I announced that the executive committee had voted for all perpetual trophies and awards be maintained at the club. Many of the sailing awards and adult awards have been updated and consolidated on new plaques and refurbished trophies. During the winter months all of the past and present trophies will be cleaned and polished and put on display for all members to appreciate.

Over the next month or so I will be asking for volunteers for this refurbishment effort. Additional volunteers will be necessary to convert old paper documents and award descriptions that can be loaded onto the website in the historical section. Look for the announcement to begin this endeavor.

If any member or groups of members have any other suggestions, please feel free to let me know. Also any member or group of members who would like help with or run a social event, please let us know. The social committee will help with your planning and providing any help or guidance in putting the event together.

Again, thank you for your continued vote of confidence.

RS Feva Summer Update
A spectacular first 2016 season for the RS Feva program on the BBYRA with Metedeconk, Island Heights and Ocean Gate juniors sailors putting the new boat through its paces. The RS Feva proved to be a great platform to test and develop new skills for the sailors. The boat had a good range of being stable enough to introduce the new sailors to a more technical double hand boat but quickly becoming performance driven as the teams learned to handle the boat. Our southerly sea breezes throughout the summer were a blast for sailors with the Feva regularly jumping onto a plane giving the sailors the adrenalin fix that keeps them looking for more!
The new RS Feva fleet had a great showing on the regatta schedule as well. With BBYRA Juniors sailing at Powder Puff, Junior Olympics, Ocean Gate Classic, RS Feva North Americans, Special Interclubs, and Weekly summer series races. Clinics are being planned for Spring 2017.
Feedback this summer was that the RS Feva hit the target and is a great tool to keep our 11- to 15-year-old juniors excited and engaged in the sailing programs.
The kids love the boat and are having fun sailing together!!
Our Junior program coordinators involved are working to keep up with the surveyed junior interest and expect the fleet to grow substantially for next summer. Three additional boats that have been added to the fleet in the past two week and we are excited that additional clubs are taking advantage of the free boat demo’s available to your club offered by Boat Locker. The RS Feva Grant is still available for new clubs looking to add boats to their program.
We have received and attached new pricing information for this fall on new and leased RS Feva’s boats that are available for those interested.
There is a limited availability of leased boats for sale which are on a first serve basis. So don’t wait if you are interested.
Best regards,
Lynda
